The state of Florida is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the United States and Boca Raton is a major tourist attraction within the state. Thousands of people visit Boca on an annual basis and stay in beautiful hotels and resorts around town. These hotels and resorts try to provide a great number of amenities in order to attract guests and provide them with a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

In addition to comfort, however, hotels and resorts also have the legal duty to keep the premises in such a condition that they are reasonably safe in order to prevent injuries to guests. Just like any other type of business, hotels can be held liable for injuries that visitors sustain due to the negligence of the hotel. The following are some common injuries that can occur at hotels or resorts and may lead to a personal injury claim.

Pool injuries — Any individual who is around water is at risk for drowning accidents. However, young children are especially at risk as drowning is the number one cause of unintentional death for kids between the ages of one and four years. Drowning accidents in hotels often occur because the pool area is not properly maintained, because proper warning signs are not posted, because federal pool regulations are not met, and for other reasons.

Slip and fallsHotels and resorts have many different areas, including the lobby, rooms, restaurants or bars, day spas, workout facilities, and more. Hotels should always regularly inspect all areas of the premises to ensure there are no dangerous conditions such as slippery floors, worn or torn carpet, debris in walkways, or other hazards that may cause slips, trips, or falls and resulting injuries. They should also make sure that all stairways are well-lit, free from hazards, and have adequate railings to avoid injuries to guests.

Inadequate security — Hotels and resorts further have the duty to provide security measures that are adequate to protect guests from dangers such as violent assaults, robbery, sexual assaults, and similar acts. If a hotel does not have appropriate locks on doors, security cameras or guards in parking garages, or other necessary measures, guests may be targeted for violent acts and injuries.

Food poisoning — Many guests of hotels and resorts eat and drink on the premises. Restaurants and bars must always abide by all federal and state regulations regarding food service and can be held liable for negligently serving contaminated food and causing illness in guests.
